Old "Japan" marked folding camp knife with bakelite scales. Only thing on it stainless are the utensils. A "junk" knife thats priceless to me because it belonged to my grandad who was an assistant Scoutmaster as a young man in 1940 and became a full Scoutmaster after he got back from WW2 so I am sure he used it on many scout camps and fishing trips to Canada and upstate NY that he used to take from PA. I think its from the late 40s or early 50s but who knows...unfortunately hes no longer here for me to talk to :-(

1950s "Hobo Knife". Mass produced in Japanese factories rebuilding after WWII for US importers.

I thank your grandad for his service. Best wishes to you and long live your memories with him! The knife becomes a bit of an afterthought, but the greatest treasures are the memories you carry forward. I hope this great knife can be a focal point.

That was my grail knife, way back in 5th grade. All of those tools and gadgets where impossible to resist. I was actively trading all kinds of things in school, comic books, baseball cards, yo-yos, hot wheel cars, pens, pencils, pencil erasers ( including those round ones with the attached brush); I was a portable department store during recess. But, what I really wanted was that knife. A classmate had it (knives were common in schools back then - even in Brooklyn) and I applied all of my negotiating skills to a acquire it. Then one day I achieved success. We cut a deal and the knife was in my possession.

But, it was not to be. My classmate came back and confessed that he was going to be in a jam with his dad over the knife. So I agreed to reverse the deal. I recall the day as a win anyway, I had achieved what I had set out to do, even if the results proved fleeing.

I still have a copy of the knife in the collection to remind me of that long ago quest.

luv "em "hobo-knives" !
doesn't matter if its expensive or cheap,
for any folder with a spoon tool
is bound to for some warm, intense
if not overly intimate jaw dropping moments
far more than anything else to
sit in one's pocket. ;-)
yes, that simple utilitarian spoon
just never fails to bring on huge smiles
come chow time.
and imo, most owners have a pretty close relationship with such folders
since its strictly for one's personal use only.
OP, thanks for sharing your heirloom
its bound to make some mouths water...
