Old Endura - broken tip

I picked up an old Endura with a broken tip for $6. It's one of the older models with the integral FRN pocket clip. It has G2 steel.

The end of the tip is broken vertically. About 3 mm is gone. The blade also has some small chips near the tip.

Questions:

* What's the best way to recontour the tip? The only thing I have to use is my Spyderco Sharpmaker and my Dremel (please specify attachments).

* What's the best way to get the chips smooothed out?

* I'm not familiar with G2 steel. Info on G2 appreciated.

Thanks.

It's behaviour is quite close to AUS-8 according to my experience, but more resistant to rust. Much easier to sharpen than 154CM for example.

If there's enough tip left that the blade isn't exposed above the handle then grind the edge to the top of the break. If not then grind the blade spine down until the edge is still below the handle. Depending upon the extent of the chips in the blade, use a coarse grit bench stone, preferably a Crystalon or diamond stone. Regrind the edge profile until the bevel is uniform from handle to tip then grind your secondary profile with a Spyderco Sharpmaker or fine/extrafine benchstone.

Work the edge until the chips are removed. Dont worry about the tip at this point. Work the entire length, so the edge maintains it's shape. You don't have to get it sharp, just get the chips out. Also if you want/need to, reprofile the edge how you want it.

If it's a large break, you can mark the blade with a Sharpie, showing how you want the blade to look when you're done.

Tips should primarily be repaired from the spine side. (Working the chips out first, and reprofiling the edge, reduces the amount of metal you have to remove). If you work it from the blade side, you'll reduce the knife's life, plus you're moving the edge up into thicker metal. You can work the edge side a little, depending on what you want the knife to look like when you're done.

Give the knife a final sharpening.

Thanks for the replies.

Normark - thanks, but I'll keep it and try to learn to reprofile a blade.

Hey CHP...

No problem..
Have fun with it..

If you ever change your mind I'll give you twice what you paid for it plus a couple bucks for shipping...

As long as it's still in good shape...

I'm looking for older/broken tipped Spydies to do some work on...
