I've about maxed out my space on my web page to host images for the forums. Having the Knifemaker status doesn't that include image hosting? If it does could someone tell me how to use that benny. Us old farts need help at times.......

Richard,
Look up at the top of this forum "Upgrade your forums experience". It tells ya how to do it. If you have a problem, let me know.

Ray, save the photo's you want to your hard drive, say in your documents, and resize them to around 480X680, delete the bigger ones if you want. Make your post, and then scroll down to "manage attachments", and click browse, in there you can click on the file your pics are in, and when they show up by title, choose the one you want by clicking on it, and then click on "upload". Wait till it loads, and you can see the title of it displayed in the manage attachments box(if you have more than one, just repeat the same sequence for the others), then click close this window, scroll down, and hit submit entry. It's really a lot easier than I've made it sound. If you need a free(spyware free too) program to resize photo's, that's very easy to use, let me know.
Good luck!:D

Will that do the thumbnail automaticly? I'm heading out to start doing some heat treating and when I get that done I'll give this a shot. THANKS! The tuffest thing about being an old fart is becomming one...... Most just dissipate in time...

I'd just like to point ut that vast majority of computer screens use 4x3 (height * width, in pixels) ratio and pretty much everthing else is close to 4x3 (16x10 for widescreen display). This in turn means that any content, such as images, will fit the screen best even when zommed in without the need for scrolling if they are made with the same proportions in mind. One common resolution that adheres to 4x3 ratio would be 640x480 - perhaps that's what Mike was trying to suggest ? Sizewise 640x480 and 480x640 should be pretty much the same so it's just a matter of usability of such an image - you probably want others to see your work with least hassle, not the most :D

Image size depends on two factors: image dimensions (resolution) and compression level. Raw picture of 640x480 pixels with 24 bits per pixel will take 640x480x3 bytes of space. COmpressed picture will take less space, depending on compression method and compression level. Most commonly used JPEG (JPG) image format allows you to set compression level- the higher the compression, the more information is discarded (hence "lossy" compression) and the more grainy picture looks. Once you decide which resolution suits you best try out different compression level settings to see how far you can go without causing any visible distortions to the image. This way you can minimize the space your images take and consequently put more of them up. Note that same compression level will NOT work the same way for all your pictures - the more complex the picture (fancy background patterns, etc.) the bigger the end product will be, while still maintaining the same image quality, i.e. no "blocks" or "grains" in the picture.

Yes, that's basically what I meant, plus this forum has size limits as to what you can post from the hard drive, and the aprox 680X480, or so, seems to generally fit. Sometimes even that size has to be resized down a bit.

And I DID forget to mention, make sure all the photo's on your hard drive are saved in jpeg format.:D

Ray, I had the same problem a while back and it turned out that the web site was retaining emails, when thy were deleted the problem went away. Now I have a lot of room. Gib

Gib, I'll give that a try since mine is doing the samething. Didn't realize they were taking up space but since you said that it makes sense.

On my end the pictures I have posted haven't taken up alot of room but now I'm wondering if they have been to large. No one has made that comment so I thought I'd ask. I've seen monsters at several ocassions. Please let me know if mine are a problem.......

I don't like having to scroll left and right to read a thread. Its even better if you can view the whole pic without scrolling at all, lets you see the whole thing at once.
All your pics have been good that I remember Ray :D

I've messed up at times on that  :footinmou
I just take the picture to microsoft picture it! and resize it there...it's proportional too.

For what it's worth, Paint Shop Pro is a great program for editing photos. Don't know if there still is one but they used to make a shareware version that had full function for a month or so before you had to decide whether to break for the $50 or whatever it was - I think it's more like $90 now but is a fine program with all the bells and whistles you could want. I used it for years when I had a PC.

Dave, I've got a couple different programs but don't ask me what they are. The pictures I posted on the Demo I had shrunk once and had to shrink again to be accepted. I think I can do now it just by a 50% reduction from the camera.

Sure thing Ray, I'm with you. I just had a nice relationship with PSP for a lot of years and plug it whenever I can. :)
