I'm really not sure where I come up for the ideas for my knives but they always seem to come out with a period look. Here's not really a small knife but compared to what I seem to be making lately it is. Its got a 4 7/8" L-6 blade that was once part of an old circular saw blade, iron fittings, and a sambar stag handle that I almost totally removed the bark from trying to make it somewhat symmetrical. Overall its 9 1/2" and weighs 6oz.

Not really small,very nice.
Thanks for sharing,Ray.
How did you get a hamon with L6,clay ?
I ask because I was under the impression that L6 was too alloyed(manganese, chromium) to get a hamon to show up.

I always like your knife Ray! It looks kind of attractive and draw my eyes to it! Hope I could get one soon! Maybe your finishing the knife with the old touch is the main attraction in most of your knives!

Thanks for showing, Ray

Doug, Almost all my blades have been done with clay. I was actually surprised to see somewhat of a hamon. This blade has been out in the shop for well over a year but I thought I had it marked L-6. The little bit of a hamon on this knife reminds me of what a hamon would look like if I got one with 5160. There's also a chance I've got a touch of CRS. :D

I like that a lot my friend. Thanks for sharing it with us. Thats a "real" knife IMO. I get so tired of overkill trying to spend too much time on artsy fartsy stuff that makes no diff and forgettin' about one that works. Love the simple straight lines, and real user blade shape. It looks ready for deer season or the camp to me.

Another nice one Ray

It looks like it would make a nice matching set with your "Best Bowie" from the Oregon show...

Very nice knife. Different way of using stag... but it looks good.

Nice work!

Kind regards,

Jos

I like it Ray, I've removed the rough bark from many pieces of stag to make it a lot more user friendly . To many people look at a piece of rough stag and see how pretty it is which is fine for a collectors piece, but let a person use a rough piece 15 minutes to an hour or more field dressing and doing chores and that knife will soon become very unpopular. I like when its buffed using white compound too, gives it somewhat of an ivory look. ;)

Looks like your keeping plenty busy,

Bill

That's a nice knife. I really like the amber color on the stag. Do you have to use some kind of dye to achieve that? Also, I like the fact that the knife blade sort of flows into the tang. I am starting to dislike choils more and more.

Yes, I use leather dye to color the stag and then seal it with Watco Teak Oil.
