old files for blades???

Either. Both would be made from the same steel. You've gotta make sure that you have good, old files though. Some of them are case hardened. It's usually better to simply buy high carbon tool steel from a known source.

1095 is a common file steel that isn't expensive, but if you want the look of a file as well, try to find Nicholson Black Master files, they actually work very well, as for modern files...I would suggest Save Edge, Belotta, Frederich Dick first, but it takes a long time to wear out one of them enough to justify making a knife. (I have a F.Dick file that I have used daily for filing SS tubing for 5 years, it still cuts better than many new files) Nicholson and Simmonds are easier to get a hold of though.

just thougt i'd chime in with this tip.
Check antique shops i found a goldmine of a shop the guy had boxes of old worn out files for 1$ he even through in a couple when i bought an anvil :D :D
