OK, my grandfather gave me this awhile back I had been carrying it then the handle chipped in my pocket and I quit carrying it. I dug it out the other day and thought I wated to know alil more about it. On the main blade is printed vancamp or vancamr its hard to make out. On the larger secondary blade are the patewnt numbers 2170535 and below that 2170537. A picture of the knife below. Any info you may be able to provide is welcome and appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Looks like it might be.......Van Camp Hardware.....Indianapolis....been around since the 1870s..might still be. Don't think they made knives, just had them made on contract and sold them.
Information from Levine's Guide #4.

OK, thanks can I get an age on it and whither its a collectors item or not. I want this info so i can stop using it entirely and buy a glass case to put it in I'm not big on further ruining seomthing if its worth something.

In the condition that the photograph displays, I don't think it's worth a lot of money. The small blade appears to be quite rusted, and is that rust along the edge of the largest blade? And there's an obvious chunk missing from the handle scale.

It's value is mostly sentimental, as your Grandfather gave it to you. For me, that alone would be enough reason to set it aside and save it from loss or further damage.

Best Wishes,
Bob

soyodragon,
I would tend to agree with Bob W that in it's condition, the sentimental value is what makes it special....not any collectors value. I would suspect you'd be hard pressed to get $10-$15 for it at a show/flea market. Enjoy it for the fact it was your grandfathers.

Oh, welcome to the forums..... :)

Bill

P. S.
You might try emailing the picture to these folks.....maybe someone will have something more specific for you....

thanks all of you. Its surface rust that i just worked off with rubbing compound and a towel. Also i had 0 intention of selling this. know where i can get a glass case fer it?

Hate to bring this up, but the scales look to be black celluloid that is deteriorating. Once cell starts going bad, there isn't much you can do to save it. The breakdown process also causes corrosive gases to emit from the scales, I wouldn't store this knife with others as it will cause rusting of the blades and backsprings. If this knife has sentimental value to you, I would consider removing the rest of those scales and finding someone to put new scales on it. The only guy I know offhand to do this is Oupa of Oupa's Outback Knifeshop, he has his own forum over at KF and is a good guy to deal with.
