In the early 1980’s, I bought a Victorinox Mauser Officers Knife. It was my loyal EDC, in pocket or pouch, for the best part of 10 years. When I started writing for a number of British outdoor and shooting publications, I think it was the first knife I wrote about. My review (below) looks very amateurish to me today, but at the time the fact that I wasn’t writing about some piece of junk with a saw on the back of the blade was quite novel. As I started to get more knives, and was reviewing them professionally, my Mauser almost got forgotten about, it was tucked away with lots of other knives. I even carried other SAKs (mainly a Victorinox Hunter) for preference.

Until recently I doubt I’d carried my Mauser a dozen times in the last decade. Changes in the interpretation of the UK knife laws however (the law hasn’t been changed, just the way it’s applied) have meant that it’s no longer legal for me to carry a lock-knife or fixed-blade except in certain circumstances. My other SAKs (apart from a Classic) all have locks, so a month or so ago I dug out my old Mauser, and I’ve rediscovered my affection for my old knife. It’s a great knife, a little bigger and sturdier than most SAKs, and unfortunately it’s size means that I’m probably going to have to buy a smaller knife as an EDC. For the time being though, I’m enjoying carrying the Mauser Officers Knife again.

Have you ever returned to carrying an old favourite EDC?

I hadn't realised that the Mauser isn't made anymore. Not sure when they stopped making it, but apparently it's a bit of a collector's item in some circles.

JB- Great thread!
Yes, I'm back with the two folding knives I stared with; a Case Sodbuster and a Bucklite 422.
I finally found, again, the only two knives that I really need. It's a great feeling.
I know others will chime in too.

Thanks a lot Lycosa. I'm actually thinking of getting a trad Sheffield slip-joint! :)

It's funny that you should post this. This past weekend, I was digging around in my closet and found my old Victorinox Forester that I got while I was in highschool.

I haven't pocketed this in at least 5+ years. Cleaned it up, took it to the stone and I'm really liking it again.

Great stuff! A nice knife too :)

Same here! Belonging to a forum such as this, and just an appreciation(addiction) to knives in general, I think we all end up buying more knives then we need. Lately I've returned to carrying my old Wenger, and a couple of Buck's as part of my rotation. Sometimes when you go back to an "oldie" it makes you appreciate why you liked it so much in the first place.

I started off carrying SAKs in the early 90's, but at some point (late 90's or so), I switched to one-handed locking folders. Just within the last 12 months or so, I fished an old SAK out of my storage box and started carrying that, primarily to have a more office-friendly knife. I'd almost forgotten how well built and handy SAKs are and have a whole new appreciation for them. My first SAK was a Spartan, but that has long since been lost. :( Now, I carry a Super Tinker as part of my EDC along with a locking folder.

I guess I sort of went the same way when I started getting Spyderco's and suchlike. I've had quite a lot of different SAKs over the years, but I realised last night that I've never had one of the Alox models. If the rain slows down today, I might even go and get one today, fancy an orange alox Cadet if I can get hold of one :)

There's something about an Orange folder. When I was a kid, a guy pulled out a folder with an orange handle and since then, I always wanted one. I finally just got an Orange Bucklite 422 and it has not left my pocket.

The only one I've ever had was a Buck V52, but I've quite fancied one lately, and I've always meant to get an Alox Cadet. Unfortunately, the UK distributors are a bit odd, said I'd have to order a box of 10! I'm hoping I can pick one up without having to resort to e-bay.

this thread sent me digging thru a bunch of stuff i had packed away.
an Imperial my dad bought me in '80 or '81 because he thought the blade design was safer. now im gonna have to clean it up and sharpen it.
i whittled many larger wooden knives with this little one. i was a serious Injun fighter with my wooden Bowies lol
