I've noticed all my knives I've oiled the pivots on mostly spydercos that the old froglube gets a strange smell after a while kinda like fast food burger grease and gets the same kind of white or cloudy colored build up color. It seems to smell great for a few weeks or so. I've heard the old froglube liquid didn't have preservative in it. But I belive I have the newer liquid that was supposed to adress this. Some of these knife were lubed with froglube 6 months ago and maybe carried once or twice in that time. Anybody else have this problem? It bothers me as its supposed to be food safe if it really was shouldn't it have a expiration date theoretically?

I have some older stuff.

And it does the same thing.
But as long as it still slick.
I never paid attencion to it.

And why are you smelling it?

Well the smell is a concern to me if it's touching my food slightly just on the half inch of the blade closed to the pivot I assume the lube went bad or something after a few months

Hate that rancid smell. I use lube very sparingly on my folders, and usually it's just a drop of mineral oil on those that just use PB washers.

According to their site, it will literally "absorb into the firearm, it will not film or coat the steel". I understand micropores in the structure of steel, but permeating/absorbing into steel is strange. It is food based, so it will potentially go rank on you.

RevDevil, that's nonsense. If it doesn'tcoat the steel how will it provide lubrication ? Absorb into the firearm ? That makes no sense. Micropores ? The oxides on the surface may be somewhat porous but not the steel .
That's a good "lube" to stay away from !!! Especially when there are very good lubes on the market.

I have the Frog Lube paste and lube of the original batch. I have never noticed a smell other than mint that disappears after a few days. I only use it on firearms, and do the hairdryer/bake method and while I do not believe that it soaks into metal, on my Glock G19 that seems dry after applying, it gets wet again when shooting. BTW, this is not an endorsement, since I have never had an issue with any lube. For knives I rarely lube, and if I do, I use Soy Lube SL-100 or mineral oil.

Froglube is good stuff and it has worked well for me on my blades and firearms. It has never gone rancid.I have found that nano oil works better for me on my pivots.Froglube when heated or the metal is heated first will not be absorbed, buy will penetrate into the cracks and crevices.A blow dryer will do the trick and kind of like melting butter.Sounds like the OP may have a build up of Froglube on the pivot and I suggest breaking out the blow dryer and heating things up a little or removing any lube and starting the process over.

I cannot agree more. It did not make sense to me as it goes against everything we learned in chemistry back in college. I'll keep on using RemOil. :)

I'd believe him as he is has some experience with the subject being a metallurgist and all.

Well.

I use it and it lubes.
One of the many gun lubes I have.
Weapon Sheild is what I use in knives.

As for the FLs claims.
You should see the gun threads about it.
