old handles and metal wedges?

I got an old and sort of loose handled axe. Handle is in decent shape, other than just being old. I was thinking rather than rehanging the head on a new handle.....maybe I could just use one of those round metal wedges and get some more use out of the handle?

any better ideas of how to save the handle and use its full life?

I'm not all that bright or quick when it comes to creative ideas or axes for that matter, so schooling me won't upset me. I'm here to learn. Thank y'all in advance.

Metal wedges, especially the round ones just damage the haft further. I'd see if the old wooden wedge can be removed and replaced. That's the best fix. There's a thread here in the axe forum explaining how to do it.
