Old handles on a new knife?

I found an old Camillus small jack, three line stamp, main blade broken off. The jigged bone handles are surprisingly not cracked. Would I be crazy (and would it even be possible) to take the knife apart, use the bone, liners, and bolsters, and build a new spring and blade? I'd end up with a nice single blade jack with vintage scales. Good idea or bad idea?

That is the essence of a knife mod. Especially when you come across some great old bone or bolsters, and finding a replacement blade may be tough.

I am sure this doesn't need to be mentioned to you, but just make sure to mark the knife somehow so people would know that it is not an original factory knife. Especially if you are using original pattern parts.

I think it would be awesome!

I'm a full disclosure kind of guy. My idea would be to build a new blade and spring, make the knife one blade instead of two, and mark it with my mark, disclosing the origin of the design/liner/bolster/bone.

I don't see any issue with that. The blades and the spring are on most older knives what wears out first. That sounds like a great idea blending new with old.

Can't wait to see the results!

Picked it up today for $1 :) I'm buried in orders for Christmas already, so don't hold your breath till I'm done.

The knife has steel bolsters on brass liners with brass handle pins. I should have no trouble taking it apart, with the exception of the peened center pin. That one may be tough to get without cracking the bone.
