I thought that this might fit in a bit better here than the Knives WTB section. If any mod disagrees feel free to move this post.

I am trying to help out a co-worker by fixing up his old PC. The HD has failed, and I am looking to get a cheap old HD to replace it. Something like a 5Gb or so is all I really need. If anyone here has an extra one, or even a whole old PC they no longer want sitting around shoot me and email or PM.

Just though I would give this a try here before going to Ebay. Thanks.

I don't have one, sorry, but I just have to suggest that your friend get a new drive instead of an older one. I tried looking for a cheap old drive a year ago to fix up my parents computer and decided it was easier and cheaper to get a new one. You can get a brand new 40 GB drive from newegg.com for less than $50. A $20 savings (if that) won't seem so great when your data is all gone, especially if it's something irreplaceable like pictures. Just a suggestion, best of luck with whatever he chooses.

What Roadrunner said. It all depends on what you value your free time at. If he loses the whole caboodle again because of the cheapo drive you will be kicking yourself. Plus you will have to replace a hard disk again. I have been around PC's long enough to know that false economy isnt just silly, its expensive.

In most cases I would agree with you guys, and would have already went out and bought the cheapest new HD I could find. Only in this case the computer is hardly worth the money of all that. It is a PII, 64MB RAM, and also has a bad floppy drive. He just wants it to work so he can give it away to someone else who hardly uses a computer I guess. I am not real sure of the situation exactly, but basically unless I can fix it free to really cheap he will just junk it. That is why I figured I would ask around and see about finding a real cheap HD.

My only problem with Ebay is I was looking, and they kill you on the shipping. $10 for a $4 HD.

Your best bet is to just junk the PC. It's not even worth it to upgrade it given what it has in it. By giving it away you're giving away the problems that come with it.

If you decide to trash this old computer, remove the hard drive first. Even if the hard drive is trashed, remove it. I usually take them apart for the magnets, why? Because magnets are fun to play with. Be advised, hard drive magnets are pretty strong so keep your finger out of the way.

After I remove the magnets, I dissasemble the entire thing. That way, unless someone really, really wants to see what's on it they would really, really have to work for it.

Not up to me to decide if it should be junked or not. I did however manage to come across an old 4.3Gb HD real cheap, that is working fine for now. Guess I will just throw in that, and an old floppy that I have sitting around the house. I will charge him a fair price, and give him fair warning that the HD is still old and could easily fail too.

This way at least he can have the computer working for whatever he needed it for, I did just help him in buying a new PC anyway.
