My husband was digging up some of our property and found what looks like some sort of old rusty hatchet head. he said he never seen one like this. i'm trying to find out if anybody knows what it is, and if it is old, but can't figure out how to attach my pic. anyone Help? Thanks
Looks more like an old wedge of some type. The hole is for a lanyard to tie on so you don't lose it? I have several similar around here, but most of the ones I have are aluminum. Maybe loggers fellers wedge, or rail splitting wedge?
It's probably at least 50 years old. I think they started moving away from steel falling wedges when chainsaw came into duty in the late 40's and early fifties. Best guess is that your wedge was made between 1900 and 1950.
If you're in the upper Midwest or Maine then it may be older.
