Old Hickory Cleaver: Inexpensive Camp Knife?

We retweeted that on Twitter as well, and sent the part about the edge along to our quality department. They had already made a change to the edging to fix that, and we wanted to let them know that it was the right decision.

All in all, we were pretty happy reading the review. Even though we were hoping while reading it that it would stand up to the task, it sounds like it help up pretty well for a cleaver being used to chop wood.

Thanks OKC! I'll be sure to update the review with that bit of info. Thanks for the retweets and ment

Obviously, the handles weren't designed for the types of use that I put them through, so I don't hold it against the knife at all. I have other Old Hickories (Hickorys?) in my kitchen that have held up fine for years. I still like how it performed though! Once I get some new handles on it, I see it having a permanent place in my camping box, partly because it works, and partly for the cool conversation factor.

Whatever you do, never stop making Old Hickory! :D

Howdy all!

<snip>

Any of you guys take any cleavers camping? I'm excited to do more with it once I fashion some new handles.

Yeah I have taken a cleaver camping but I'm a foodie who also takes 2 stoves and assorted cast iron pans. My camping buddies are as bad as I am. I cook with my cleaver though...

Making a bit of progress on the re handle. I also modified the heel of the blade to better get your fingers behind the edge for wood carving.

Micarta is rough cut and I drilled the holes out to 3/16 to accommodate the pin stock I have.

Next up, cleaning up the front end of the scales and epoxy!

Toooj will remind me that this is considered abuse, I know. But I am one who likes to know my blades limitations, LOL.

Well, yes, I did take it camping once. Can't remember exactly what kind of wood it was i chopped but it was extremely hard wood. I bent the blade. I was able to pound it back with no heat. I resharpened it & have been using it for what it was designed for ever since---food stuff. Takes a wicked sharp edge. I love it.
