I've been looking at flea markets, junk shops, farmers markets and various yard sales for Old Hickory kitchen knives, going on a couple years. NO Old Hickory to be found. Thought I saw one a couple weeks ago, it was a good copy, but when it came down to basics, it didn't measure up. I've seen new ones for twice MSRP at some shops, but they are only about 7 to 15 to begin with MSRP. Anyone found these at junk shops/flea markets and the like? I've been looking in central MD/central PA/NW Delaware. I love my Spyderco kitchen knife, but would like to get something a little more traditional.

Old Hickory is discounted by sellers all over the web it should be easy to put together a set cheaply. Or you can take a small step up in quality and buy Warther. They are carbon steel as well and the engine turning is eye-catching. They are a step up in fit and finish but still inexpensive. You can check them out at http://www.warthers.com online. I have some Old Hickory still and a couple Warther's, I like them both.

I look for 'em as well when hitting the flea markets and yard sales. No joy.

It seem the people that use them keep them forever.

Just as hard to find Dexter Russell stuff second hand around here too. The meat market down the street sells DR Sani-Safe knives after they're done with them but they're usually ground down to fillet knives.

I like my Warther's. They are made from 440C and the "family" tries to stay around 59 Rc plus or minus one.

They are a bargain - just look around at other knives.

Save yourself time and gas -- Old Hickory knives are dirt cheap new.

Here's where I got mine:

I've been slowly building a set as well, but does anybody know anything about this? (quoted form site linked above.)
Editor's note: Old Hickory has changed the thickness of it's steel to keep the price low and make them even easier to sharpen. Please read notes at bottom of page about these items

Part of what makes these such a good product is the way the blades are made. Has anyone bought any new ones to see how they'll hold up? I find used OH's occasionally, and on smaller, narrower bladed OH's the tips are almost always damaged or bent. Seems to me that thinner blades would cause a lot more of that.

Is this yet another product thatwe'll have to start looking for the older, "better" ones?

thx - cpr

Smoky Mountain Knife Works has tons of them for what appears to be reasonable prices. From the ones I have looked at, they do seem thinner. There is a set of 5 or 6 for 25 bucks or so. Nothing is as it was.

I bought a complete set including a holder this summer at a yard sale. It's not old hickory but looks almost just like it, its called forge craft. good stuff even came with a holder that I hung on the kitchen wall. I had never heard of the brand before but dont pay alot of attention to the kitchen type cutlery. any way, these are pretty good and you can find them dirt cheap. I paid $10 for the set.

The main reason I am going after them, is to hopefully find deals at the local flea markets. Thanks for the pics and suggestions. I agree, they're so good no one wants to sell them.

I found some at an antique store.Old Hickory, Chicago Cutlery, fORGECRAFT , and a CaseXX. I should have examined them closer as two of the Old hickories have bent blades. They must be pretty soft. Combined I paid $24.

Ive used them a lot. Processed two deer. They dont stay sharp long, but get sharp fast and easy. I lke them.
