a triple tooth "pocket chain saw" and a haftable "lid" for my 2 qt artic canteen. I"m way too cheap/realistic to tie up lots of money in stuff that is easily lost/broken. I think more in terms of cutting hasps or cyclone fence than I do splitting wood. :-) I'm considering one of the $20 mini- leathermans (IF the scissors work well). The chisel will start splits in wood, won't break if I pry or hammer on it, and wooden wedges can be used to follow up. Trimming beard/hair with a knife sucks, long term, and scissors are very handy for several other jobs.

Seems like most of your posts involve/encourage some kind of breaking and entering or violation of the law. Any particular reason for that?--KV

I messed around with the pocket chain saws. Just couldn't see myself really using one in the woods. I find a small folding saw more comfortable to use.

You don't have to be realistic or cheap to spend money on woods resources. You just need to decide what works for you and then carry it. If you like the chisel idea, go for it. I view it much like a wedge and you can pound the crap out of it driving it into wood in an attempt to split. I have done that with knives for the hell of it with hammers (not recommending this activity), but honestly, most wood processing needs in the woods are minimal and if a chisel or wedge is the kind of implement you like, a small hatchet may in fact work very well for you if you are wiling to carry it.

I have the Leatherman Squirt. The "scissors" on the Micra is stronger. But I find the Squirt more flexible. You will have to make that judgement on cutting efficiency relative to your needs.

On the Old Hickory paring knife..... steel is generally soft. Better to have a harder carbon steel for woods use along the lines of the Kabar Becker BK-16 or BK-17 (or a Mora).

Speaking as an owner of rural property, I can assure you that most of my neighbors would not respond favorably to your "cutting hasps or cyclone fence"....

alewn, you do know that you can split lengths of wood very well with a small folding saw with no hammering or pounding at all? And it's way quieter and less effort.

But he can still read the postings.

Alewn should have noticed that there really aren't many SHTF threads on BF. People with a strong interest along those lines tend to gravitate to other forums. You see, we might do a lot of things during a real emergency to survive, but that tends not to be the discussion point here on BF. And yes, I even have a 22 mag rifle that is specifically for an emergency woods situation. Bought two boxes of ammo over the weekend. It is the first 22 mag I have seen in a store since Sandy Hook. Years.....

 I got some 22 mag last month and couldn't believe how much it was.....got some mag shotshells too. The 22mag is one of the best "bad situation" rounds I can think of!

I agree. My interest in this forum centers on learning primitive camping skills that could be pressed into service if I unexpectedly get stuck someplace due to the mechanical failure of a vehicle or an injury. If I wanted to see what whackadoos like this guy have to say, there are plenty of other forums dedicate to that kind of thing....
