A friend of mine found the top knife about 15 years ago rusted away in the back of a drawer in an old farm house he'd just bought. He gave it to me and I cleaned it up and have been using it ever since. Good knife but my wife hates it, so I decided to make myself a copy of it.

7" blade of 3/32 A2, full flat grind, satin finish.
Tulipwood handle shaped as much as I could like the original one and left with a 400 grit finish to keep the wood lighter.

The new one will go in my kitchen and the original will be sent to a cooking magazine we subscribe to that has asked for old kitchen utensils to use in their pictures.

(see it in other sizes)

Would of never thought of making a copy of a Old Hickory but that looks great. There's a reason they've been around for years, great knives. I love the shapes of their blades. Mean slicers for the kitchen or game processing.

Thanks for sharing.

Dan, that's really clean! Love the combination of tulipwood and copper...

Great job and idea on that replica. :)

Though , I would keep the original one , those knives are ubiquitous and there's a chance IMO the folks you send it to might not use it because of that.

what a great idea! My grandpa had a few of those around the kitchen. He used to butcher his own cows of his farm. I need to see if my grandma still has them in the drawer.

That is a great looking new knife. Make sure it does not get stuck in the back of a drawer to rust.

How can your wife hate an old hickory. She doesn't understand the beauty of an old carbon hard use knife?

Sweet!

I love my Old Hickory knives. Only problem is I forget to dry them and put them away and they end up a little rusty. Then I have to clean them up again.

Dan I was just looking through your old posts and came across this little baby. Nice work!

It looks very nice indeed
I think my wife also would be very happy to have a similar piece of your handmade Old Hickory replica ;)

Thanks for showing, Dan

looks really good, thanks for kicking this back up.

i wonder what the thickness is?

I'm glad this came back up, too!:D
I searched and searched for this without remembering the
maker and never found it. Thanks!

t1, ack thanks. thinking back i remember reading that too...i don't know where my mind is today.

I grew up on a ranch/farm, and knives were an everday tool. My parents did all their own butchering, beef and pork. I have seen a lot of the Old Hickorys used in my lifetime. That is a great job, looks a lot better than the origional.

Same here, when it's time to use one it has to be sanded and scrubbed before use. A couple swipes on my red handled kitchen knife stone and it's ready to go.
