Ok a couple recent threads about boutique axes, the plague of imported lower quality axes and then some of you commenting you're finding and restoring old USA high quality axes to their heyday... Got me to thinking. My wife and I will be hitting garage/estate sales, pawn shops and various and other sundry places this year. I'd like to be on the lookout for old retired USA high quality axes that could be restored to usable condition.

With that being said: which makers or old brands should I be on the lookout for? What to stay away from? What axe/axe head is considered the premier axe in its day?

Your probably going to want to hit the axe and tomahawk forum, and find an hour or five... :)

But with older axes, its really hard to go wrong. Just make sure the poll isn't mushroom'ed to bad, and the bit / blade hasn't been used to cut wire or rocks. As far as the premier axe of the day, your going to get about a lot of different answers. Most will be Kelly Axe and Tool or Plumb though.
