I've been advised to post this to the "traditional" forum by the good folks on "general discussion" Wow, lots of subforums on this site. Glad I found it! I've been given an old Ka-Bar stag handled trapper. I think I was the first person to open the box. It’s a beautiful thing, the stag is perfectly matched on both sides. I know nothing of these knives. My question is are they common? And made to be used? Or should I try to pass it on to a collector? Thanks!

If I had it, I'd use it. If you want to sell it, then I'm sure some of us knife knuts would be glad to have it. I like Kabar pocket knives. Don't have but a couple, but they were well made and sharpened up nicely.

That question begs another...who gifted the knife to you?
Yes, they were made to be used! A collector will say "no! Don't use it! Keep it as new, with box, papers, and all."
Others will say " Go ahead and use it! That's what it was made for."
Both views have merit. Welcome to Traditionals:thumbup:

I posted in the General Forum that it screams to be used but at the same time wouldn't fault anyone if they put the knife up for safe storage.

I just think it needs to see the light of day...

Merry Christmas,

P.S. I noticed that you have started the same thread in three different forums with the same content. If this is a loosely veiled attempt to just advertise the knife for sale, that would be in violation of the discussion boards. Also, selling by non paying members (Gold or higher) is forbidden. A quick read through of the forum rules is advised...

I say enjoy it fully, by carrying it the way it was intended to be used. Still others will disagree.

The culture on this forum is dominated by users, not collectors. The majority of the advice you'll get here is to use it, no matter how valuable it might be.

That particular knife might be quite desirable to a collector if it is new, unused, uncarried, and in the original box. If I were you I would not use it until you determine how much it is worth in the current condition.

Suppose it is worth $200 to a collector? Would you still want to use it? For $200 you could buy a perfectly serviceable $40 slipjoint to use and have $160 in your pocket. I don't know the actual value of that knife, but I would suggest you find out before deciding to use it.

Unless you have a Gold paid membership here, you can't ask for valuation nor can we give it to you, so you'd have to research elsewhere.

Absolutely great advice :)

Good advise given. With that I'm closing this one. I'll leave it here, for now, as a reminder to others.
