Found this at a giant flea market yesterday. It's probably a 3 1/2 pounder in good shape but the real deal is the handle. Shows up pretty good in the picture and the handle in cross section is not oval but is octagonal (like some vintage rifle barrels.) The guy who sold it to me said it dates to the 30's and that the handle might be original.

So what do you guys think? I am so new to this hobby that I did not know there was such a thing as an octagonal axe handle! Does 1930's sound reasonable and could this really be the original handle? It's in excellent shape. Whatever the actual facts, I thought it was a great deal at $35.

Thanks

Steve

Oops - just saw the thread about octagonal handles being currently available from Handle House. Learn something every day. But I still like this axe - so can anyone tell me whether this would in fact be a newer handle as opposed to being very old?

Sometimes the older octagonal handles actually change to round at the grip. I believe house handle saws the octagon all the way down, although I may be wrong since I've never ordered one. The patina on that one certainly looks like it has some age.

Thanks for the good news halfaxe - this one does change to round in the last several inches. And looking down at the handle through the head it really does not look like the handle was put on recently..
