A while back I stumbled on what I think is a Kelly axe (man standing next to oval vat holding an axe). It was stamped CCC-S which I can only conclude is civilian conservation corp.

About the axe: would anyone know the years Kelly would've used that mark?
CCC-s: does this stand for civilian conservation corp? What's the -S for?

What would the cost of an axe like this go for?

Pictures really do make a difference. There are very knowledgeable folks on here whose 'bird dog' abilities at ID and history are initiated by stories that are accompanied with pictures. PhotoBucket, for one, is a host site from which you can attach things such as this.
As to value of axes: brand new boutique Swede jobbies still cost 10X what vintage 'made in USA' axes seem to fetch at auctions and flea markets.

The CCC went from 1933 to 1942. A pretty safe bet it was from that time period.

Condition is everything to axe collectors.

I wish I had a picture but it slipped my mind... :-\ Ondition was great. Plenty of life in it. If memory serves me right, it was a cruiser.

Kelly didn't use that stamp. The CCC applied it to the axe when they got it. Don't know what the 's' is for.

I knew an old guy who worked in the CCC back during the great depression and he just died about two years ago aged nearly 100 years.

He had a great life later as he became a motorcycle dealer after WWII and made some good money doing it, he also raced the motorcycles he sold. He lived in Warren, PA and was named Mark Wolf.

Anyone have an idea what the potential price for an axe like this may fetch?

If it is a 3.5 Lb double bit, it will bring $30 to $75 depending on the buyers. If it is a 2.5 Lb. cruiser, it will bring about $20 to $50.00 more.
Again depends on who your buyers are and assuming as you described it is in very good condition. Condition is in the eye of the beholder...

You need pics.
