I need some advice with this knife. This knife was one of a few from my great uncle. It's a large Case knife that probably hasn't been touched in years.

There seems to be junk inside of it. I tried blowing it out with an air compressor, tried running soap and water, tried running a thin piece of plastic through it, and no success.

Can I soak this in soap and water without harming the wood scales?

Also I would like to put a lanyard through it, but I noticed the blades slightly go into the hole. We're these holes designed for a lanyard?

Last question, if this knife is valuable, would I harm the value of it if I decided to polish the bolsters? I want to make it an edc.

Maybe I should send it to a forum member and have it professionally done.

First of all I will preface this by saying this is just my opinion and I am not a knowledgeable CASE historian. Having said that, I can tell you that that hole in the one bolster, is not common to a stock CASE knife of any type, and I would guess it was put here aftermarket for a lanyard. Secondly, the scales on most CASE knives that look as that one does, are not wood, but a polycarbonate of some type. It should be impervious to water, BUT I think what you need to get the knife functioning smoothly, is some lubricating/penetrating oil like KROIL or Liquid Wrench. I have found that when a knife like this sits for a long period and 'seizes' up like yours has, a bit of liquid wrench or such is just the ticket. Also IMO polishing the bolsters would be a non-issue, especially if that hole in the bolsters is aftermarket as I suspect it is.

Just for the record, there are hardcore CASE collectors out there who can speak to this knife specifically, so you may want to seek one out if this knife is significant to you-which based on your post, I suspect it may be.

Best Luck--Don

Very interesting. I thought they were wood because they have the distinct smell similar to a wood duck call. Especially after I got them wet. The hole looks very old, like it was machined. I guess I'll keep working with it, and see what happens.

What happened to the other posts that were in this thread?
