When outdoorsfan was over he dropped off an older knife with broken plastic handles, and asked if it could be fixed. Since it was a stick tang, I cut some thin black micarta to go around the tang, then put tan canvas slabs on it.

WOW! That looks great!

This is a Tramontina carbon bowie that I've had for about 25 yrs. It's been on countless camping trips (even one ill-fated rafting outing), rode in the trunk kit of a few cars and was my first line of home defense before I was old enough to get my FOID card. It had a "faux" stag plastic handle that had cracked and broken after some impromptu knife throwing in Michigan. The slabs were covered in several layers of camo and electrical tape.

This knife is also one of two that I own that was ever actually close to being used for self defense. When I first lived on my own, one night someone attempted to break in to my apartment at about 1:00 AM. He was trying to open the back door and I was alerted by my 95 lb. Doberman that slept on the bed with me. She stalked into the kitchen and produced the most blood curdling growl I have ever heard in my life. I got up, bowie in hand, and heard him retreating down the back steps. Good move on his part as my Dobie was ready to rip him up.

Needless to say, this knfe has a lot of memories and sentimental value. It's now ready for some more camp outs and good times. I plan to pass this one on to my son.

Beautiful job!

Fantastic. Those scales really change that from a decent looking knife into a custom. Well done.
I hope the Doberman got a treat after that one.

She got a huge treat in that she went to live with my parents shortly after that happened and became my dad's baby. There was nothing too good for her as far as he was concerned. Dobie's are great dogs, very loyal and super protective.

Looks good. Thanks for the story, too. Glad to hear she got a treat as well.

Excellent work John! Like outdoorsfan said, that knife looks great now! I'm sure it will mean a lot to his son!

My gracious...the scales look awesome on that knife. I think John is actually the "Knife Whisperer"...:D

Outdoorsfan, that is a great story and the best part is that you and your son will continue using this knife in the outdoors:thumbup:

Hi John -

Very nice - that handle really completes the knife. Well done.

Sean - sounds like the Dobie was the first line of defense!

best regards -
