old knife with white patina on handle

Hi,
a friend brought me a Loveless-style knife, marked Schrade. The knife I think is over 30 years old and is handled with a "plastic" (not micarta) that has made a white patina on the surface. The friend asked me to disassemble and put some micarta, but I am against it, I would like to leave the handle that is there by removing this white patina. I tried to use some Flitz, it seems to go away but then the patina returns within 30 minutes. Do you have experiences in this regard? What could I do to permanently remove the white patina?

The phrases that come to mind are - "Most old gals look better in a new dress." or "Everyone looks better in new pants."

Plastic decomposes with age. You would have to sand away the surface to expose less "weathered" plastic, then re-polish. This may or may not completely remove the hazing.

In the end, you may agree with you friend that a new handle would likely be better.

If it were a rare and valuable knife, that would make a difference, but an old Schrade would probably be a good candidate for a new handle.
