I have an old Gurkha knife that I need some information on. It is marked M 43. That is the only mark on the knife. It appears that the bolster and blade are one piece. To me it looks like they were forged that way. The sheath is brown leather over wood. It has the two small knives with it. The handles are some kind of wood riveted to it. The leather has cracked and the blade can peak through it. It is used but not abused. Can the sheath be restored or replaced. I like the knife but am unable to use it because of the sheath.

I can't identify the blade, but Terry Sisco is a forumite who specializes in making very nice leather lined sheaths for khukuris.

You could send him your khuk and have him make one or POSSIBLY he might be able to restore yours. The other option is more durable & weatherproof but not very traditional looking, and that is to send your khuk to Craig to have him send it to Edgeworks to have a kydex sheath custom made for it while they are still making them for the second batch of WWIII's (that is, if it's not too late for that--Craig may have you ship it directly to Edgeworks). Cost for that is about $55, last I heard, which is a FANTASTIC deal for a custom made kydex sheath designed for a khukuri.

Click here and scroll down the page to see a couple of M43 khukuris. If yours is similar, it is probably a military-issue knife from WWII with collectors' value. As such, its original scabbard has value in its original condition. If you need a khukuri for hard use, you might consider buying a new Gurkha House WWII model to preserve the condition and retain the value of your M43.

BTW, if it has value as a collector's piece, you should be forewarned that kydex sheaths CAN scratch your blade. Some makers line them with suede or other material to prevent this, but you should ask Scott at Edgeworks about this first.

In fact, if your khuk is as Berkley described, I wouldn't bother having another sheath made for it, nor would I even take it in the field; it would stay in my house, on the wall or in a safe. Do a search on this forum to find out how to best take care of it (preventive maintenance is sometimes necessary). As Berkley suggested, I'd just buy a GH khuk from Craig and use that as my every-day khuk. You may find Otto's khukuri design (he was the winner of the 'Design your own khuk' contest) appealing if you like how your M43 looks. http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum33/HTML/000318.html
Craig will probably be accepting orders on it after the WWIII project is completed, although he did state that it would be a very limited one-time-only run.

Thanks, guys, for providing such great answers. I'd also suggest that you not use the piece, but keep it as a collector piece. If you don't want it, I'm sure Berkley will make you an offer - if he hasn't already
