I have just started to collect knives and am interested in getting some older ones, like maybe a German WW2 dagger or 18th or 19th century hunting knives. I buy a lot on ebay. Can anyone recommend knowledgeable people that could take a look at old knives and tell me if they are likely genuine or replicas? Are there people knowledgeable enough about knives in general, or do you have to go to specialists depending on what kind of knife it is? I'm not asking about professional appraisers, but just subject matter experts that are willing to help folks out every once in awhile. Thanks in advance!

You might want to check out the Bernard Levine Knife Collecting and Identification forum here at Bladeforums.

Check out Bernard Levine's forum a bit down the page, he's your best choice:). If you can name the type of knives(military, etc...), we might be able to point you to a few other folks as well.

HTH:D:).

I've heard estimates that at least 25 times if not fifty or even a hundred times as many Nazi daggers have been made in China than were ever made in Germany. In that market, fakes are the norm rather than the exception. Buyer be(very)ware.

Keep something in mind when looking for someone to tell you the knife you paid $50 for, is worth $1000, knowledge takes education and time, both of these are worth something, and anyone worth his salt charges for appraisals, and verification services.

That said, there are several appraiser in the business, if you were going to spend the money, I'd go with Bernard Levines service.Click here for link
