Good morning.

I picked up an older Case fixed blade leather handle knife on ebay. I need to get some pictures of it to share. It has a 4 3/4" blade and a 3 3/4" handle. Very slim and trim knife. Neat old knife. The blade is stamped CASE with no other makings. I think I have another new way to spend money ;)

Do any of you have some info/ pictures/ or stories to share about older leather handled gems?

Thanks+++++

my dad has some older western`s,marbles, remington`s and others with leather wrapped handles. they have been being produced since at least late in the circa 19th century or so i am told. the leather wrapped handles hold up well when used and are still being produced. my great uncle had a case model fixed blade with leather handle in korea during his time there. sorry i have no picures of any of these to show.

Hi Dude
I love leather washer handles myself, reminds me of my childhood ;-)
Here is an old Kinfolks knife that I found in a junk store for $9.00. The handle had been covered with a 1/4 inch thick layer of what seemed like road tar and old masking tape. I whittled the tar off and used turps to clean the leather off. It is of course in the style of the Marbles woodcraft. I made up the sheath for it and now use it once in a while.

Best regards

Robin

but my ww2 era catt 225Q gets used quite a bit during the warmer months of the year, yardwork, etc. Tough knife leather handle & carbon steel, the leather handle has held up beautifully and i'm sure it wasnt exactly babied in it's storied life before i took possession of it a couple years ago:thumbup: one of my favorite knives for sure.

Leather handled knives are traditional and tough! Here is a Western combo set from the 1940's -- 50's..

Heya Robin,

I believe I may of found a twin to your Kinfolks Woodcraft style sheath knife in my little stash of leather-washered sheath knives?..

Here's an old '40s Case I found in the road. It had been sharpened on a grinder by its owner and to add insult to injury, had been run over a few times as it lay in the road.

I rescued it and spent an evening in the kitchen sink with a sanding block and an assortment of wet/dry paper. She looks pretty good now.

Hi Anthony
The spacers on the one I have were turned that colour by the tar on the handle, yours are the correct colour for the model. Thats a nice clean knife you have there, I love the Marbles woodcraft shape.

I have a question. I have a new-ish knife with a leather washer handle. What do I need to do to make sure that it ages as well as the beauties here? I've read from multiple sources that rot is a real problem with leather handled knives.

When I rehab'ed the old Case, I warmed up the leather with a heat gun and soaked in some Sno-Seal (beeswax w/silicone). That's the way I treat my leather sheaths, too. Beware of things like Mink oil that can drastically soften the leather.

Christian,

I don't believe you have to do anything special to season the the handle. My own method is to just dab a little mineral oil on the leather once in a while to keep it from getting to dry is all.

Case still makes a series of leather handled hunting knives; the Finn and Little Finn. They resemble the old Rapala filet knives to me.

I have to say, that leather is my favorite handle material on a sheath knife, hands down.

This one is a Western made BSA sheath knife, probably made in the 60's. BSA Model No. 1381 Kerr's WES08BS, 4" blade 7.75" overall.
