..on another thread lucky soul recounted finding a near mint orig. Gerber mt, one of which I own, got it if memory serves almost 20 years ago, and it is very well used and still 100% functional.
I remember picking the Gerber over LM for comfort and robustness, have since picked up 3 various LM's, got me wondering, does anyone know which was first multitool as we know it?

The OSS had one during WWII. I believe that SOG made a copy of it in 91-92.

..wait it is coming back to me I think, saw a picture of that OSS thing once, wasn't it designed for escape/evasion? ..prob. mistaken but was it Al Mar's 4X4 that influenced by OSS thingy..off to try and find those old magazines..
 
You are right about Al Mar. It was a fairly simple tool with an outrageously high price. If IRC the list price was about $140. I don't think they sold too well. Seems to me the first multitool was the SAK.
