Old Marbles No9 Axe question

Hello, Chris is my name and I am new to the forum. I camp, fish, Jeep and hunt in my home state of Michigan. I picked up a Marbles axe at a garage sale this weekend. It has a steel band around the bottom of the handle. The band is well made and fits the handle perfectly. The handle is not cracked. Is this original and what would its purpose be?

Thanks

Chris

looks like someone put that on there so their hand did not slip, as the handle has no swell. set screw to keep the band from slipping. probably a home made handle, or trimmed.

also, hatchet, not ax.

Gotta agree here. Factory and/or replacement handle would have a swell. This could well be the original haft but something chipped or broke at the back and the inventive owner carved/rasped/filed down what was left and installed that grip ring!

Thanks guys.

What is the break point measurement between a hatchet and an axe?

Chris

I don't know if there is an actual definition aside from describing "is it meant for one-handed operation or can it be held/used with both hands"

Thanks that makes sense.
What about the notch on the bottom of the blade?
How about Ax vs Axe.

Chris

As far as the difference between a hatchet and an axe is whether its optimum power is at a full swing or if a partial swing is enough to do its job

Huh? What job? Partial swing with any axe will suffice for duty as a hatchet. Perhaps I'm reading you wrong.
