Which would be better for self defense, the old Civilian or the new G-10 version?

The old handle is a lot better. I guess the G-10 was used to follow the (silly) G-10 trend. G-10 is also cheaper to make. However the G-10 is not bad. Overall, the Civilian is a fierce defense folder. Join Dr. Lecter in the chop-chop crusade!

Maybe I'm just wierd, but as soon as I got the G-10 model, I tucked my aluminum handled Civilian away. The G-10 is sooo much slimmer in profile while riding in my pocket (which is were it spends the vast majority of it's time). I found that the surface of the G-10 actually seemed more uniformly rough, and therefore just slightly more secure in my grasp. My 2 centavos for the other side of the issue.

I agree with Brian. I like the lighter weight and slimmer profile of the G-10 version. Mine is one of the early ones without the stainless steel liner and is perfect for neck carry. G-10 makes for a very secure grip.

I've got both, too. I love the "cool factor" of the old model with its Kraton insert, but functionally I'd go with the G-10. It's grippier all over, and has a warm, natural feel. It's a little bit lighter, too. Also, the old style clip was neat but needed to be replaced (IMO) with a standard steel clip for rapid deployment; the G-10 already has a "normal" clip, and in less noticeable black. My aluminum Civilian is officially retired.
