"La Bataille de Poitier" by Steuben.

In 711 the King Charles Martel stopped the Arabs in France (Poitiers).
The yatagan of the old arab chief looks like a khukuri, isn't it? A proof of their same origins : the greek kopis.

Beautiful old painting Stephen!!!!
I really like the old Yataghan and you're right, it does have a khukuri like appearance.:)

Barb is of Polish descent and to help connect her with some of the culture and history I took her to see an exhibit put on at Philbrook Art Center here in Tulsa quite some time back.
I learned a lot myself and was entranced by the exhibit and some of the old artifacts that was on display. There was some of the most exquisite china I've ever seen as well as some old rough hewn tables and chairs that were very solid and well crafted.
Among the things on display was an old painting from way back when in Poland.
There were all sorts of weapons and tools carried by the subjects of the old painting.
Poland at that time was a Democratic Kingdom and everyone enjoyed many personal freedoms of which freedom of religion was one of the main ones. From Polands location there were many and varied people from all walks of life that was displayed in the painting and gave a good instance of what likfe in Poland was like back in that day and age.
There was much more including why they were called the "Winged Warriors of the North" but I won't go into all that.;)

Can you tell us who painted the picture and when it was painted?

Yvsa is right on the knife. Even the back ground scenery looks good. Reminds me of some of the Buffalo Grass hills in Kansas and Oklahoma.:)

Stephen,

Thanks.

I wanted to know the date of the painting because that would be the best indication of the period during which these weapons were used. Artist often then to include props that would be familiar to their audience. These are not necessarily historically accurate.

The yatagan shown in the picture is most likely 18th or 19th century. There are a couple of photos of this type of yatagan blade shown in Stones' Glossary (fig. 867).

That's absolutly right.

Yvsa:

Poland's history is very interesting. Unfortunately, the Poles were situated in a bad neighborhood (between Russia and the Germans). Nobody thinks of them as a military power, but they were the ones to save the day when the Turks were at the gates of Vienna.

As I recall there was a group of Polish fighter pilots who performed during WWII just about as well as anybody.
