In response to a question from an old post I made, "how much anti-venom was used " to treat my wife's girl friend's snake bite.

The answer shocked me, 16 vials of anti venom to treat a bite from a pygmy rattle snake.

They make up for their size in potency! My roommate's cousin in college showed us a large mason jar with about 5 pygmy rattlers in it. When asked how he got them in he said "I just picked them up" He didn't even know what they were. I guess God watches over fools and stupid people.

sams, I hope there was little or no long term damage. Guy I worked with used kept poisonous snakes for a hobby. A baby something or other from Africa got a piece of him while he was feeding them and he spent a long weekend in the hospital for it. If I was still in contact with him I'd ask him what the anti-venom bill was.

Your wife's girlfriend was very fortunate. Most facilities don't have that much, if any in stock. As mentioned, it is expensive and the shelf life is not that long.

Just talked to an ER Doc yesterday about anti-venom. Starting dose is 6 vials @ $4500 a vial ! Very few hospitals stock any at all.
