Did Remington make the R-1613 toothpick folder with both the round UMC shield and the Bullet shield? I believe I have seen both described in publications.
Thanks

P. first and foremost welcome to the forums. According to Brewster in his book, he believes that the R1613 was made with both shields as some Original advertising showed. He also states, "I believe this pattern with the cartridge shield is the rarest of all the Bullets. It's value would be astronomical"

So if you got one with the Bullet shield can I touch it just once.

Thanks for the welcome and the reply to my question. NO I do not have a R-1613 with a bullet shield but I do have one with the round UMC shield. I don't want to make you ill but my wife purchased a small tackle box, at an auction, about 15 years ago, for .50 cents and the knife was in the bottem of the box. Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Hi P. Roberts,

could you please describe me, what "a round UMC shield" means? I´m following your discussions with high interest over here in Germany.

But lots of things you´r talking about I just don´t know, especially your abbreviations.

Thanks in advance

Let me butt in - Claus, lieber freund! the round shield refers to a circular metal trademark inlayed into the scale as opposed to one shaped like a bullet in the case of Remingtons. These "shields" identify makers and years and sometimes grades of knife. Lots of the Cases can be aged generally by the shape of the shield. Remington "bullet" shields are much sought after on this side of the pond! The round shield generally contains two concentric circles possibly with the initials "UMC" stamped around the inner circle. Hope that helps. Forgess nichts Arbeit macht das Leben zuess

UMC stands for Union Metallic Cartridge Co. This was a company that Remington purchased a long time ago. For a while, cartridges made by Remington were headstamped REM-UMC. Finding one of those now is fairly rare.
