I am acquiring an old SAK, a Spartan, still has the Victoria stamp on it, and instead of a key ring, it has a metal hoop going through the knife body. Questions: how old is the knife? when did they stop using the Victoria tang stamp and the metal hoop? Thanks for replies.

Hi,

Victorinox began replacing the bail (metal loop) with the key ring in 1968. Total phase in probably took a few years while tooling was changed and completed parts used up.

As far as the VICTORIA trademark, I don't know when its use was ended. I hope someone can shed some light on that.

Cheers - Joe :)

Does the model you're getting have a clip point small blade?

If yes, it was the model called the Camper (Not the same as today's Camper which also has a woodsaw) from 1967-1976. In one of Vincent's scans it shows the date as 76 and the bail is still on the knife.

As for the Victoria tang stamp we better wait for Vincent.

The Victoria tang stamp is helpful - but it might still not be enough date the knife properly:

The latest date shown for a Victoria trademark was 1952......

According to the timeline I have:

If your model has hidden (non-exposed) rivets then it has to be Post-1961.

The bail/shackle was supposed to have been replaced in 1968 -
so the best guess is it's a 1961-8 model

(although obviously as my other post's scan shows, bail/shackled models were still being sold as late as 1976! in the USA)

It has a clip blade and non-exposed rivets. How much is it worth?
I almost got one model before, with the wood saw, Victoria stamp, bail or shackle, exposed rivets...It got away because it sold for something like $50+ dollars. shucks...

I'm not sure of the worth, but never buy a production knife thinking you are going to make money. Remember Victorinox is one of the largest knife makers in the world and there are lots of those things out there.

I was not planning to make money on it, rather make it a keepsake. You know, the things between the father and his sons. :)
