Hi
I have an old sashimi knife that is cracked. As I don't have access to a blacksmith I thought I could solder the cracks and just grind them off?
This knife will only be used to cut boneless fish fillets.

The blade is about 2mm at the base thinning to about 1mm and the thickness about 15mm. I assume it is a type of stainless steel. Light wood handle wrapped in a single thin bamboo(?) strip.
If I can't fix it I'll hang it on the wall.

Appreciate any ideas

If the crack is more than half way up the blade, I'd just grind or cut it off with a Dremel cutting wheel. You'd still have a long carving knife. I would not use solder - lead or other heavy metals toxicity possible.

Oh shoot, if you do end up using solder, make sure you use a type that is food safe and has no lead in it.

How hot can you get it? Silver solder takes quite a bit of heat to work, at least the stuff I have used.

Neither low temperature solder nor high temperature silver solder will work.
While high temp solder might give it strength, the temperature will ruin the heat treatment of the blade.
The best thing(s) to do are leave it alone, or cut it off.

Thank you for all the advice. I'll try tin solder otherwise recycle the handle. I will have to cut so short it would look a bit strange.
Thanks again.

It looks like you're now going to have a shorter knife. On the bright side, the short stump might be long enough to make yourself a new knife.
