Let me start by saying that I am a HUGE fan of the Basic series. I am lucky enough to have scored 2 B11s, 2 original B9s, an original B5, and a Euro B4, with a choilless B10 on order :D. So with all this talk of the new basics, and seeing how we are halfway through the release of the Basics That Never Were series, I have a few questions for any all-knowing HOGS out there. What was the difference between INFI and M-INFI? I know that M-INFi was supposed to be a lower cost INFI without sacrificing performance, but is it a different composition, or a shorter heat treat cycle to save on costs? Some of the newer members may not know that an M-INFI B9 did the amazing 1600 cuts on manilla rope while remaining sharp, so would INFI do even better? Or is the difference between them minimal? In my use I haven't found that M-INFI gives up anything to "regular" INFI. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on the subject? Thanks in advance

Tony

I have heard others mention that M-INFI had what they felt was better edge retention.

I'd like to hear what Jerry has to say on these pressing matters!! ;)
My B9 got sharpened last night. Not because it had to but because some "Bad Influence" pressured me into it!! It was still shaving sharp, not a perfect shaving swipe like it is now but it would shave. Now it scares the hair off!!!

Basic have have driven through 3/8th thick steel plate, 70 degree bend without breaking, cut 1254 pieces of 1" hemp rope and still shaving sharp, cut through 10 1" free hanging hemp rope pieces, handle supported 32000 lbs of weight at the blade/handle juncture and still springs back to "true", chopped through 15 2x4s and still shaves.

Basics pretty much do anything any other Infi can do.

Thanks Gravelface, but I know that M-INFI can do anything that any other INFI can do. My B9 is awesome. Maybe better than the 11. I was more looking for what was different from the chemical side. I realize that the heat treat is proprietary, but how was the M-INFI supposed to save costs? It all started as INFI correct? So was the cost savings in the HT? Not that it makes a big difference. Both are incredible. Just more for my curiosity than anything else

Thanks 1966c10, that's kinda what I was looking for. Helps anyways. I'll keep digging :pig::pig::pig:

There is a Great Story to go with the how and Why of the Basics, but that Story is Jerry's Story to tell, not mine.

Use the search feature to look up old threads on this subject, there is lots to read. No, I will not tell the story in private messages or emails, Like I said, not my story to tell, but I would like to see it all in Print some day.

I think Jerry has more than one good book's worth of really good Stories about Busse knives, His 3:00am phone call stories alone would make good reading.

Good luck with your quest.

Does anybody know how the old B7 came to be with two different blade profiles?

Many of the older blades showed variations in profiles. The older smooth and slotted bolt mean streets had 2 different profiles, the older badgers had many subtle profile shapes, and as recent as a pair of Satin Battle Rats, a bit more "belly" than the others......

Well, I've been doing some digging. I came upon a few useful old threads for anyone else looking for info on the vintage Basics (stjones I'm talkin to YOU ;))

I'll leave this one here for now. As I stumble (drunkenly) upon more HOG lore, I will update this thread. MMMMMMM BASICS! :D   :D

ETA: Found one more good one

From your pic it looks like they're both crinkles, so no clue as to the difference it the blade profiles, but ...

It's more than just the blade profile, the choils and talon hole size is also different. A Kydex sheath for a smooth coat will not work on a crinkle. The crinkles have the smaller choil, except for the B-9, the smooth coat B-9 has the smaller choil:confused:

It's most notable on the B-3's the handles even look different.
