Old school tactical for my Mom

I've been meaning to make a knife for my Mom for years now. She has stoked my interest in art from a very early age, playing classical music on the record player and taking me to museums and antique shows since I was just a little squirt. She has also always encouraged and supported my creative exploits no matter what they were, so it seems only proper that I now make her a knife.

But she probably wouldn't appreciate a big bowie or chopper the way most of you guys would... She's a very proper, elegant, and classy lady who prefers the finer things, so I wanted to make something that matches her style. So it seems only proper that her knife be a classic damascus dagger.

Anyway here it is. Let's hope she likes it!

Classy indeed! That's gorgeous!

I made a simple little knife with a mesquite handle off of the family farm years ago for my mom to open cat food sacks with. :) This is much nicer.

I really like that Derrick. I am sure your Mom will love it. Very classy. You did a great job on that piece. Are you going to be able to make it to Atlanta?

nicely done, very classy

You do realize that you just armed your mother with something to behead you with when you visit, Right???? hahahaha

Thanks guys. I wish my photos could have captured the shimmer in the damascus a bit better, especially in the guard where the layer count is a bit higher.

Brion, yes, I will be in Atlanta this year - Table 17Q. I really look forward to spending some time catching up with you too; it's been too long. Your TOMB knife looks spectacular, by the way!

Derrick, that is so cool. Our moms sound similar except mine had a sort of built-in dagger (Mom, I hope you can't read this).
Seriously, that is sweet. I couldn't pass up a thread titled 'Old school tactical for my Mom.'

That is beautiful Derrick. Among other beautiful things, the guard has great flow to it. Nicely done. I know it's a gift for your mom but will you still be bringing it to Blade at least for display?

Very cool Derrick!

I made a knife for my Momz about 15 years ago... yours is 1,000 times nicer.

BTW- Where did you get those coins, they are huge!!! ;)

Thanks guys. Not sure if I'll be bringing this to blade with me... hope to have some other cool stuff on my table instead :)

Nick those coins are huge and they actually make the dagger look much smaller than it is. The coins are old silver Thalers from Europe. The Thaler is actually the precursor to our American "dollar" and they were first minted in Austria and Hungary in the late middle ages / early renaissance. The ones in the picture are from my collection. One of them is from 1576, 200 years older than our American republic. I thought some renaissance era silver would be a somewhat fitting prop for the dagger...

Really like this one! Real class! Hope to see you in Atlanta...Are you testing this year? Ben

Thank you Derrick. We look forward to seeing you. The persian will be there up until Saturday, it turned out good. You really have to see the hamon in person. I am pulling for you, you will make it. I will see you outside the room Friday morning.
