"Old School" Wood Chopping

Gusty winds recently brought down a small dead tree, so today I took the opportunity to obtain some more firewood and try out the 1998 Shop 1 15" AK I got awhile back. About thirty minutes of chopping yielded the following image (I got my camera to download again).

The tree was just over 3" at the thickest section I chopped. Years of seasoning resulted in it being harder than hell. Despite the hardness, the AK handled it just fine with no more than a little dulling of the edge. The AK's horn handle was comfortable for the most part, though the lower half of the handle tended to transmit vibration from chopping due to its somewhat sharply elliptical shape. The handle was large enough that the scrolled buttcap didn't dig into my hand. All in all it was fun using an earlier example of HI's number one model.

On another note, here's a pic of the branch that I handled with my Chainpuri a while back.

Nice.

Man, I got to figure out how to make my computer recieve photos and then post them here. I've had some real neat piles of wood. Look kinda like a mad beaver went through the forest.

Yes! We need pics of Munk and Munkville!

Nice knife. I like the pile of wood too. I gotta start looking for some more mature HI knives. I guess I should wait for the FF to come in though. Waiting is hard, and I already bought enough of the smaller knives, so...

Maybe I'll try that soon, Hollow. I've got a chip reader for the UBS port to read the camera...last time I tried though, I could not get the computer to acknowledge the picts, despite having two programs for just such a thing. When I get that far I'll ask you for help in posting here.

I've been gathering firewood ever since I found HI forum with various khuks. It's a good way to test them. I often fell a tree with a khuk, and even more frequently de-limb a tree with one, even preferring that over a chain saw on particular trees.

Naturally, trees that are not particular get abused by just about anyone passing by. There's a tree with no self respect, one might say, and give the tree a good whack. But anyway, many of these trees are directly off the fireroads, and the stumps have increased in frequency. When I got to these mountains, you couldn't find hardly any evidence of hand tools on a tree, but only chainsaws. There are folks who've lived in these hills for a couple generations, and of course some of the local NDN's can trace their ancestry and presence in these forests for much longer.

Imagine if you're the son or daughter of some of these persons, and you've been raised in this area and have been on the fireroads countless times. Now imagine if you start seeing hand chopped stumps. You are curious. Who is using an axe? Why, I haven't seen that for over 30 years, one fellow told me when we spoke.

It is I. And the locals laughed and laughed. Munk, that crazy white man in the big house, has been chopping down trees with a Khukuri.

These gosh durned moderators are crazy; thank God you got three of them so they cancel each other out. Keep an eye on them, dont let them go off the deep end. Well, at least have a floaty toy ready, you know, a rubber duck or Walrus-figure life-presever? As long as Howard and Yvsa keep an eye on me, I shouldn't spread too much of my rampant spiritual observations and kukri-chop too many trees. Yangdu can oversee the mop-up with Nasty's help.

I just thought of something. When they haul me away to the Funny Farm, for using a ancient technology tool like a khukuri in a world made to spec by machines and silicon chips, an attendant will be overheard in conversation to the Doctors.

"Well, he isn't completely nuts; at least he used a kukri that weighed 28 ounces."
