One of my friends, a Marine sniper and a Vietnam veteran, who has seen and done more than most, showed me his only pocket knife, this old Schrade. It was his drill instructor's knife, and he got it, and his instructor's ring. My photography skills are not that good, and lighting and a LG camera phone didn't capture the age and regal qualities of this great old knife. My buddy was carrying it, I sharpened it for him and gave him a Vic Pioneer to carry instead. Got to take some quick pics of it, and his drill instructor's instructor ring.

I stopped by his shop last night to return some coolers that we borrowed for a big family party, and shot the bull with him and his associate. I asked if he had the knife handy, I would like to share it with some people online who would appreciate it. He was proud as punch to share the knife, and wanted to share the ring too.

The pocket worn scales and heavy patina on the blade are enough to make me fall head over heels with this old girl.

That's a darn nice knife, Dan!

Any idea of how long he had it, and where he got it from? It looks like it's traveled a long long way with him or someone. Lots of nice time polish on those scales. Reminds me a bit of Mr. Van's old Remington.

Great-looking knife  I'm sure it could tell a few tales.

That is VERY cool. My hat is off to you for the sharpening and the added gift you gave him.

Thanks for sharing those pictures.

Great looking scout knife which could tell a lot of stories, for sure.

Congratz on the knife and the nice ring - both are areally great looking :)

just happen to have one like it. found it quite a few years ago and only ever seen 1 or 2 others like it. the one I have unused. must have been bought surplus and put away.

Excellent in all kinds of ways, silenthunterstudios.

Thanks for taking the time to write this up and post the pictures.

flylock, what a find!

I'm partial to the shield.

Dan, is yours a Schrade Walden stamped knife? I have not seen this knife with a USMC shield like that. Thanks for showing it.

I thought for sure it was a Schrade, I think I first thought Imperial when I saw it. I'll be down my fathers shop tomorrow to change the oil and find out what's going on with my heater. We'll stop in and have a few with this guy at his shop tomorrow too, or else he'll come up to my father's shop. Flylock, that is a beauty.

I'm not sure if he got it years after boot camp, or just after boot camp. I believe that he may have gotten it after his instructor passed away. If it went with him on some of the tales he's told, it has truly seen a lot.

I'm fairly certain that's an Imperial, and fairly old one at that. Likely pre-dates the merger with Schrade as that's not a type of jigging that they used, but it could possibly have some Ulster roots. Very cool shield, never seen a USMC one before.

VERY nice ring as well! I can imagine that those two items are mighty valuable to him, not in terms of money but something much stronger.

That's a beauty. It's funny to see how many of the guys who do some pretty "tactical" work use traditional knives. I was just in Bass Pro yesterday and a couple of the younger guys were in the military, and talking about their Emerson's and such. One of the older guys working there said his best friend was a retired Army ranger, and never carried anything but a Buck 110.
