Old Schrades (Fix Blade Play)

I have a number of my grandfather's old imperial Schrade knives. I'd love to give them some carry time, but they're very loose, with a lot of side-to-side wobble. Is there any way of repairing that, or do I have to relegate them to a drawer to just look at occasionally?

Thanks for moving this to the correct location and putting in a better title. That's what I get for not finishing my coffee before posting.

You're welcome. That's why we get paid the big bucks. :p

Depending on how old they are, your Schrades could have the infamous "hidden pins" which are un-fixable without disassembling the knife. :(

I have a couple of old Schrades, and I tightened up the bladde play by taking a pair of needle nose pliers and putting a gentle "s" bend in the liner between blades. It fixed the problem, but you may want to consider whether or not to do it to your knives. Mine are working knives, so I don't mind the "crink" in the liner.

I have an old Schrade-Walden 25OT (Folding Hunter) that might've been 'fixed' that way. Got it second-hand, and it arrived with a mysterious bend in the brass liner between the two blades. I have no idea if it was factory-produced (I hope not), but the bend seems to be un-straightenable, as it has a very springy temper. Attempting to bend it back isn't effective, as it just springs back to it's 'original' odd krink. I wouldn't ordinarily worry about it; I bought the knife as a user. But the 'krink' in the liner actually interferes with proper closing of the blades. It rubs a little too snugly.

There's an active thread in the Traditional forum, which illustrates that in a pic posted by member 300Bucks. This assembly has apparently been used on some older Schrade, Camillus and Buck folders (by Camillus). Take a look at the pic here:

Thanks for the link. I don't think it was the problem described there with the pin; this is a single layer knife. What I did is remove the scales, then gently squeezed the liners together in a vice. This seemed to fix the wobble, I guess the liners were just loose from wear.
Getting the scales back on is tough, they had little metal tabs which bent around the ends of the liners. After a lot of swearing I'm resorting to gluing them back on. With any luck and a pass on the Sharpmaker, I'll have a proper fishing knife (it's the style with the bottle opener in the blade, descaler on the back side of the blade, and a fish shield on the scales)
