Old Sharpmaker vs new

Can someone remind me what separates the old (202, I think?) Spyderco sharpener from the current (204?)

Did they both have the 30 & 40 degree angles, but the 202 only came with fine stones while the 204 comes with fine & medium, or did the 202 only have one angle? Are the stones interchangeable between the two? If the 202 only had one angle, what was it?

Thanks, guys.

The old and the new are identical except for the holes/angles. The old has two holes and are set at 20 degrees each. The newer model has four holes-- two at 20 degrees, and two at 15 degrees. The stones are interchangable.

I gave away my old model and got the newer. For the way I use my knives, though, I sharpen most of them a 20 degrees each. I'd have been fine had I kept the old one.

The old model that I had didn't self-stow like the current model does... and I don't remember it having the slots to hold the stones horizontally to mimic using a normal flat stone. As noted, it also only had the one set of holes for one angle.

If they would just sell spare bases to hold the diamond and UF stones, I would be thrilled. :)

Do Spyderco sell a set with the full compliment of stones ??

Maybe we should all let Sal know he needs to make a base which holds all the stones :)

Sharpmaker version 205/6 :D

I agree. I will pick up the diamond and ultra fine stones some day.

If not a larger base, at least they could create something like a "spare rod holder" which would hold 2 rods instead of the individual round tubes like the UF's come in. That way, at least you could keep the rods paired up in a single container.

Are you listening, Sal?

I've been thinking about this as well. a nice leather pouch these would be nice

I think I mentioned in another thread that the ideal setup would be something that you could attach to the main SM base using the four screw holes in the bottom of the base. That way, your Sharpmaker and extra stones would all be one self-contained unit for storage/packing.

OK, you convinced me (as a benchstone and belt sander using, non Sharpmaker owner) that the 202 I was looking at was worth picking up cheap - under $18, shipped. Thanks again!
