I was wondering what the deal is with the older sharpmakers. Is there much of a difference? It looks like there are circular holes instead of the newer triangular ones. It looks like this:

I have seen a few of them online for cheaper prices than the newer sharpmakers, is it worth saving the money or should I spend the extra $20 for the newer version?

Well, never used one of those.

But, my first introduction to the Sharpmaker was a dude (really, a "dude") who swore by his as I watched him sharpen kitchen knives.

The newer version is worth the added money for the extra angle as well as the additional utility it offers. Unless you plan on using the stones freehand (which is what I use the old ones for) it is worth biting the bullet and getting the newer version with its superior function.
