im going to be honest here, i just want a quick answer and, despite my best efforts, cant get any real information reguardless of where i look. im hoping turning to the knowlage of real, live people will prove more helpful.

heres my trouble. years ago, we moved our garage and, in the foundation, i found an OLD knife with a rusted blade, looking rather pathetic. after a bit of cleaning, the stamp near the handle revealed "Shrade-Walden; N.Y. U.S.A; 137" due to the rust, im going to assume its not stainless. its a non-foldable, fixed blade with a leather cord-wrapped handle. im just curious about the general age that this knife might be. any help would be appreciated!

Welcome to our forum. Your knife was made between 1946-1973. The handle is made of a series of leather washers, compressed tightly, held in place by the the pressure from the pommel. The steel is carbon, as you have deduced.

Interesting, as the owner of the local knife shop in town, who calls me every time he gets some old Schrades in on trade, just let me know he had taken one in. Nice little knife, many thousands were perhaps made. Value in very good condition is about $20.

Perhaps another forum member will have something to add to this. Guys?

I have one near mint condition, but mine has a serrated blade like a steak knife. They are nicely made knives, in the old style of course, like the ones made in the same time frame by Western and many other manufacturers. The model number on mine, rather than being a tang stamp, is an etch on the blade opposite the tang stamp "SCHRADE-WALDEN N.Y. U.S.A." Mine has alternating black and white spacers on each end of the grip, and the small guard and pommel are aluminum. Odly, the blade appears to be stainless.
