Got these from a flea market with a view to maybe make small bearded hatchets, now I'm not so sure & might just make handles for them as they are, as they're so cute....

Hammered eye needs a little tweaking.

:)

You found those tomahawk heads at a flea market ? That's cool

I'd wait for some of the other guys to chime in on these before you do anything to them at all. Or at least look very closely for markings before doing anything to them. Could be truly old, maybe not. They're like a trade pattern which is an old pattern. Nice find either way.

I should have said I'm in southern Spain, now added to profile. What we would call a "car boot" sale, originally folks selling from car trunks, but now small stalls or just stuff literally thrown on the floor!

Nice find, all I seem to find are single bits, and pick axes[emoji13]

You're not looking hard enough ;) only joking, these things usually turn up when you're not looking!

Those are great! And touch marks on them maybe like 3 small crosses?
Only thing I can see is a few lines, maybe an "M" ?

Very likely old, but old wrapped type heads do turn up a bit here, they were made for a very long time! They are not everywhere, but not uncommon either.

I'm not an expert but they could be Indian or Pakistani made.
As I said above, I should have originally said I got them in Spain, undoubtedly Spanish made.

Thanks for the replies. Think I'll just make up some rustic handles.

With no real evidence to support the idea, my brain still started screaming counterfeit trade axe. But now knowing you are in Spain, I no longer think either of those things are true. Not trade axes, not counterfeit.

Thank you for this post, not knowing the term "trade axe" has meant I've just spent ages Googling & reading!

It's ironic that these were very likely made in the Basque region (northern Spain/Southern France), the only difference between these & the highly prized U.S trade axe is they didn't have a boat ride!

Maybe ;) I love finding out about this stuff. :)

Those are neat, it looks like they could be made from car leaf springs wraped around and welded together, what does the inside of the small part of the eye look like?
Thanks for sharing:)

I suspect these were made before cars were around! And not spring (see pics below). But they are a wrap, same as most (all?) old axes.

Ah ok, I didn't consider that they could have been from elsewhere.
But you were correct, they are old, just from another country.

In straitening the eyes it's become apparent that this one is made from wrought :)

The bit seems hard enough after running a file over it so don't know if it's got a harder bit, must resist the temptation to clean it up & soak it in ferric chloride to see the different metals......

I'm going to make simple handles for them, they will be used.

Top handle Oak, bottom handle wild olive, not based on anything, just what I felt like doing.

Top head ferric acid etched, bottom one had nothing done to it other than the eye straightened a bit.
