Why does my some year old Tech Bowie kraton handles smell so strange?
Smells almost like some kind of pungent fruit.
My not-much-older Pentagon handle smells only faintly of rubber.
Could it be the white inlay washer things?
What are those made out of?

I don't know for sure but is it possible the synthetic material is "Out Gassing"? Certain plastics will decompose over time, or with exposure to UV Radiation. Just a thought. Good Luck.

Could it be sweaty hand cheese?

A good wash might be in order (knife).

Professor.

Did you buy the knife new from a store? Or used? NIB on the secondary market? Could be a used knife?

you know, i loath to own anything with kraton;
and worst yet neoprene.
unfortunately, some products just don't come with any other optional handle materials.
<gimme zytel any day!>
if rubber based products are not aired, they do reek.
and let us not forget, that the older cordura fixed blade sheaths (which btw are chiefly structurally from leather} does make it a prime candidate for mouldy growth where the prevalence of moisture is ever present.
it's best to always air and sun such stuff from time to time.

Right now I would never be able to notice any scent on my Fatcat. Like an idiot (intoxication may have played a role) I used her to eat many Brats & mustard. Then in the wee hours of the morning closed the blade forgetting to clean it first.

Let's just say should i need to meet ANYONE I will not be putting the Fatcat in my pocket until i have a chance to thoroughly clean her :D

I would hate to think of the impression I could leave, lol

The white spacers are molded plastic. As for what is causing the smell, i do not know. Best guess is what has been mentioned above, some sort of off-gassing from the material. Wish I could give you more info.

Molded plastic? Oh well, it doesn't bother me that much.
Thank you for the reply.
How about checking that out and meanwhile maybe try using other colors, like brightly colored glow in the dark washers?

put down your bong (or in your case probly the crack pipe) , once in awhile , and your knife will smell fine. ahahahha

Yes, as i said, my Pentagon and other kraton handled knives doesn't smell like this. But enough beating a dead horse if no answer can be found.
Thanks

My guess is that you probably handled something pungent prior to handling the Tech Bowie... OR... The knife itself was exposed to heat and the rubber "melted" on the molecular level. This released the smell. :eek:
