First off, Merry Christmas to everyone.

I recently received the Cold Steel catalog in the mail. After seeing the Wild West Bowie, it rekindled my interest in the old style bowies. Was wondering if anyone could refer me to a decent one with wood or mayhe stag handle. Doesn't need to be as big as the Wild West Bowie. In fact that is a bit long for me. The price is nice at just under $100. At least thats what the sale price is in the catalog.
The only thing I really dislike is that brass guard. I would prefer nickle if I had a choice. But that old feel of wood, stag or something similar just looks sweet to me and I don't know where to get a decent one that is not a $15 POS.

First let me say that most of my knives are Cold Steel. But I was very dissatisfied with their Wild West Bowie and returned it due to what I felt was poor quality. I wasn't even sharp and had an overall cheap appearance. YMMV.

Define "old style," if you would.

There are a lot of ways that can go. Historically accurate?

No right or wrong...just different "animals."

Kinda like that Condor. Iron Mistress is kinda nice too. Thanks, I will check them out further. Just got a Ka Bar Combat Kukri. Biggest knife I have. The wife kept asking if I knew how big it was. Well, Yea. But I must admit it is a bit large, but still like it. And yes every Bowie I see seems to be pretty big also. Was hoping for maybe an 8" or something.
Thanks for the input.

Forgot to answer the question. Duh.. That bottom one is about what I have in mind. Something that looks like its from the old west. I have seen a few that have a Gil Hibben knives logo on the blade. They seem cheap to be a Hibben but some look cool. Just unsure if they are any good or just display knives.

Always loved the CS Laredo Bowie, but it also has a brass guard.

There is a maker on here in the Custom Knives for sale area named Gulzar that makes very high quality repro's of old bowies. I have 2 of his Jessie Clifft bowies that are SUPERB and right around a 100bucks. His others are more expensive. He is from Pakistan I believe, and that did give me pause, but he ships fast, usually in less than a week and like I said I have a thing for bowies' and his are exceptional. The Clifft pattern look like a big straight back butcher knife which is what I was looking for and what I got and they work beautifully from limbing braches to carving our Xmas day roast and Thanksgiving turkey. keepem sharp
