Old style Delica...a question

Folks,

I found one of these locally today, and I am quite interested in it. It has the integral moulded clip that I've thought would be good at times, so as to avoid scratching things up with the metal edges of the current clips. Besides, I adore the Delica design and this is a bit rare now. To top it all off I don't own anything in G2 (GIN1) steel; which this one uses. Finally, it is fully serrated and from photos of some of these older models I've seen it appears that the old designs generally had serrations continuing a wee bit closer to the tip than does the current style, which I also prefer.

So here is my question: Is it possible that these older knives had a serration pattern that wasn't as "deep" into the blades height as are the current ones? If there isn't thought to be a difference in this regard, then I think perhaps this knife has seen a fair bit of sharpening as it seems to have "shallower" serrations than the current ones. Does anybody know about this?

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

Spyderholic,

That's good to know. I'm glad you made me aware of this, because it may be that the knife is in great shape otherwise. I have been looking for one of these for awhile so if it's restorable then I'll probably buy it even with some teeth wear.

Thanks, Jeff.

Folks,

I went by and picked up that lightweight Delica, with moulded clip and fully serrated edge. It sure is a classic! Apparently it's used, but is in very good shape. The blade's not worn, and mostly unstained and the action is smooth as glass with lockup perfectly tight. The blade "drops" towards closed position by gravity when the knife is unlocked. I really like this in a folder! I was fortunate to get it for $45 Canadian, or about $30 U.S.

I really like this design, and in a way now lament the change away from moulded pocket clips. It doesn't grab the pocket quite as tightly as the metal clips do, and is course not adjustable as they are but it is very comfortable and non-scratching. The moulded clip does add significantly to the thickness of the piece, but is in one way nicely "hand filling". The G2 steel seemed easy to sharpen. I notice that the blade is a bit smaller than that of my current VG-10 Delica, and I recall reading here awhile back about how the Delica blade design was changed a few years ago. As to my earlier query, the serrations are somewhat shallower than the current style alright, apparently by design but work just fine.

Anyway, a good purchase on a useful knifewhich I'm really enjoying carrying already.

Cheers, Jeff/1911.

Congrats on your purchase!
My first Spyderco was an older-style Delica in AUS-8 and molded pocket clip. I think AUS-8 versions came right after switching from Gin-1. IMO...I feel the handle frame at the pivot on the older versions of the Endura and Delica make the knife stronger than the newer, flatter versions. Because the pivot area is thicker, that's what it feels to me. Although I do not prefer the plastic clips (they tend to lose some of the tension over time). I miss the slightly reinforced handles on the Zytel versions.
