Getting in the mood. Just make mine a Lambsfoot.:)

“A barlow knife is a type of folding pocket knife that features double or single blades that open at one end only. This pocket knife was manufactured in Sheffield England specifically for export to the States from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century and is known as a “Barlow” after one of the earliest and most famous makers.”(Kuntz, Fiddler’s Companion, http://www.ceolas.org/tunes/fc).

The knife was made by Luke Furnace of Stannington, which in the eighteenth century was a small village on the outskirts of Sheffield. Luke Furnace’s name occurs in the Sheffield directories from 1774 and 1787, but not in the 1797 directory, so he was presumably dead by then. He probably adopted the mark “1760” because that was the year he obtained the freedom of the Cutler’s Company. The original Barlow, after whom the knives are named, was working in Sheffield at the same time as Luke Furnace.”
Sorry to resurrect this very old Thread, but I'm very interested in Luke Furnace. I live in a 16C house in Stannington, and in that house in 1966 an old document was found (I have a copy) referencing Luke Furnace. We have grinding wheels in the Garden, and a Crook barn next door. Many of the residents of my hours were knife makers and farmers - I'm keen to learn more about the Luke and looking to track down and buy a knife made by him, as it was probably made in my Garden.

What an extraordinary collection of fascinating info today. Thanks to all

"Guardian's Express", ain't that the truth - right on! Wonderful insights into Australia and great pics, thank you. That's a real beauty from Leslie, grats.

Thank you for the "Barlow" and the Cotton Mill Girls vid. Great stuff.
Incidentally, Knife Magazine is now on-line and has a library of past issues available - albeit unfortunately available only to subscribing members. I have only the free membership right now. Lot of good stuff including an outstanding news feed.

Reminded me of views I've seen of San Quentin Prison here in California  Then of course, I find info about prisons in following posts

I know what you mean about the crikey button - definitely would be unfortunately appropriate.
Sorry to hear of your mom's condition. I knew it was time to take further steps for my mom's welfare when one time after a visit I kissed her cheek to say goodbye and she looked at me with puzzlement in her eyes and said "Goodbye- who are you?"
Great pics of the interiors, thank you

More great info about Australia, thank you.
Had to butcher many quoted posts to fit under the "word limit". Sorry to all.

If you’re still on the forum contact me - I live in the house Luke Furness lived in when he was young. We have documents refering to him found in the rafters - if your related happy to send you details

Thank you very much Frank :)

Hi Simon, here are 2 of the responses I made in the other threads you posted in, before knarfeng knarfeng very kindly set up this thread for you

Hi Simon, and welcome to Bladeforums. I am from Sheffield, know Stannington well, and have studied and written about the history of Sheffield Barlow knives. This [the Guardians of the Lambsfoot thread] is not the best thread to ask your questions though, there is a popular and longstanding Barlow thread here. I will ask one of our kind moderators to move your post there. I would suggest searching within that thread, using 'Stannington'. However, please read the rules for this sub-forum, which you will find stickied at the top of the page, and also linked to in post 1 of this thread.

All the best

Jack
Hi Simon, I think you missed my response to this in the Lambsfoot thread. I'm from Sheffield, very familiar with Stannington, and in fact I am related to the Furness clan of Stannington (though only by marriage). There are a lot of older posts relating to Stannington Barlow history in this [the Barlow] thread, which you'll be able to find by using the forum search function, and searching within this thread. I hope they make interesting reading, but replying to very old posts will almost certainly be frowned up. Please read the sub-forum rules and guidelines, which are stickied at the top of the page. Looking forward to chatting with you.

Jack
