I saw this knife (Old Timer 51OT) isted on eBay recently and am looking for some information on it. From the blade markings it appears to have carbon steel blades (no +). Does anyone know if this or any other Old Timer lockback was made with carbon steel? Does anyone know when this knife was made?

thanks,

stan

The knife you refer to is a rare pattern. While some were marked as you state 51OT, it was generally refered to as a 504. It was only made for a couple of years in the middle 80 tys. I do not know why it was made for such a short period. It has always been a favorite pattern of mine and the closest that Schrade has made to a sunfish or elephant toe, pattern ( I say closest it is not the same, One blade lockback ect). The one you refer to is the one under the Old Timer line. This one is indeed carbon steel, as are most old timers ( The old timer line is carbon steel and the Uncle Henry line is stainless. ) This pattern was also made in stainless steel Schrade + with micarta handles and was one of the patterns used in the president commemorative set produced during this period.( This series was sold through American Express and this pattern had a picture of Andrew Jackson with blade engraving.) It is a nice knife and getting hard to find. I hope this helps Lt.

Thanks for the info on this knife. How many other Old Timer lockbacks did they make in carbon steel? As far as I know all of the current Old Timer Lockbacks are stainless. I'd love to have a carbon steel lockback as a user.

thanks again,

Stan

Any of the sawcut delrin handle models should be and have been Carbon. Stuff like the new rubber handle line is stainless. In fact I have a 47 OT that is stainless on ebay, right now. The carbon ones do make nice users. They are also still fairly plentiful and reasonable. Lt PS Schrade has done some unusual things so the way to be sure is to check if it says Schrade +, SS, or stainless . Anything is possible and part of the fun of this hobby is looking for the oddball or mistake .

Just sticking my 2 cents in here.
You can't always go by the blade markings.
My 125OT (me and lt632ret had a good discussion on these knives a while back) is stainless and has no blade marking except Schrade USA.
