Today I received my first Old Timer Classic knife. Being a semi-serious collector of Old Timer knives, I'd been meaning to aquire one for some time, but they always seem to sell at inflated prices.
Well, I found one on eBay that someone had listed in an unusual category. Being the one-and-only bidder I was able to buy a mint in tin OTC96 for $20.
Comments:
First off, the knife is an aesthetic beauty. Jigged bone handles, fancy OLD TIMER shield, and stamped bolsters.
The blades are well-finished, and the tin and hat pin are super-cool.
The Everlasting Sharp blade logo adds nothing to the knife, but it isn't overly distracting either.
Something that I consider odd, the tang stamp doesn't include an OT model number, only SHCRADE+ / USA LTD. The model number printed on the box is 96OTC and the knife has an Old Timer shield, but no "OT" on the tang stamp.
The low point of the knife is the fit. The trapper blade has a very tiny amount of blade play, almost unnoticable and not worth mentioning. But the clip blade is moderately loose. Not as bad as a very low-priced knife, but much more than is typical of the normal Old Timer models.
IMO, a fair value for the knife would be $40-$45. I won't hesitate to buy the rest of the series, if they can eventually be found for reasonable prices.
Best Wishes,
-Bob
