SCHRADE OT25

Just thought I would share this.. My Dad and I was doing some blade grinding in the garage and I come across this. I remembered seeing this knife before when I was a kid. My Grandfather EDCed this back in the 1980s and when he died my Dad got it. You can see the blade is blackened, my goofy Dad blued it years ago with a blueing kit he bought at wal-mart. LOL when I found it in the garage it didn't look this good, so Dad and I cleaned it up, polished it, and oiled it. Believe it or not it still had a pretty sharp edge on it. This one says U.S.A. on it, I believe the newer models are China made, you can see the Old Timer shield fell off, God knows where it went.. Anyway we cleaned it up and Dad told me to keep it, so of course it was an honor to take it.. Just thought I'd share a classic...:D

Nice find and great keepsake with family ties. Ya know, those blued blades look cool, I may have to give that a try.

thanks, yeah the blued blade does grow on you, I'm thinking of doing it to my Endura wave..

Great legacy! Thanks for sharing.

FYI - stainless steel (as on an Endura) will not blue the way carbon steel does; it may not take color at all. There are finishes out there for stainless, but I think they have to be baked on. I could be wrong though.

thx - cpr

Any knife with that sort of history and sentimental value is a great one. I don't know how willing you are to tinker with it, but if the missing shield bothers you, perhaps you could try your hand at some simple jigging with a Dremel in order to help camouflage it? As for the blued blades, I think they look rather nice. Similar to how one of my Opinels turned out after it spent a night stuck in an onion.

E-mail me your mailing address and I'll send you one you can use for parts.

That is uncommon in these times, but not uncommon on BladeForums. Yabs, you make me proud to be a part of this forum.:cool:

I was also going to suggest talking to a jeweler - a good jeweler could make a simple shield for you, maybe with your grandfather's initials on it, or even have SCHRADE engraved on it.

There is an awards & recognition products store in San Francisco, and one of their biggest money makers is replacing/remaking trophy plates, escutcheons, etc. Getting one made for your knife shouldn't be a problem.

I have a sheild from the same knife. I replaced the plastic scales with wood, and I have no use for the sheild. I can send it to you free if you are interested.

Just shoot me an email.

John

That's a really nice knife, made nicer by its history. I had one of those, and you're right, those thin carbon steel blades really take a SHARP edge!!!

Thanks for all the comments, you guys wanting to send me shields, thank you kindly.. Let me know if you need me to cover anything.. I can at aleast send you something...

I think I have this exact knife (or very close) in a Schrade Walden which I still put into my rotation now and then. It is a great knife for it's time and for today.
